One of the most important structural steel fabrications to perform on materials is bending. It is needed to form structural steel in a certain way to support a project. If you're looking to have more success with this stage in structural steel fabrication, take the following precautions.

1. Decide Between Manual or Machine Bending

There are multiple ways structural steel can be bent. You can use a hammer and bend steel sections with manual effort or you can use a heavy-duty machine that takes care of the bending for you. If bending isn't a large part of your fabrication process, then manual efforts would suffice.

Whereas if a lot of bending needs to occur or there are thick pieces of structural steel, machine bending is your best bet at having an efficient process that leads to consistent bend quality that you can trust.

2. Figure Out the Right Angles

For your bending in structural steel fabrication to have a payoff, you need to know how far to bend these pieces. There is a certain angle that's relevant to the project you're supporting with structural steel. You want to plan these angles early in the design phase of fabrication.

You might need to look at the overall structure involving steel to figure out how each section needs to be angled to fit together properly. Once you figure out what angles to bend your structural steel materials at, you can have more success because you'll have added direction.

3. Carefully Assess the Materials Being Bent

You want to know how bending will take place before it's required because then you can plan a lot better. For instance, you'll have a better idea of what tools to use and what type of resistance you'll have to work with.

Think about the exact structural steel that requires bending, assessing its durability, thickness, and additional tolerances. As long as you review each of these details for enough time, you'll have clear expectations of how bending will go and procedures you can implement to ensure nothing deviates from these original plans.

During a structural steel fabrication project, bending is probably going to come up at some point. If you know how to plan correctly and use the right tools, this stage of fabrication will be just as smooth as the rest of the stages.
